| Definition |
| Shin splints or runners overuse is a general term used to refer to a pain in the
shins. |
| | |
| Indications |
| Lower leg (below knee) pain that might include redness, tenderness or swelling
like lumps or bumps in the shin area. |
| Cause |
| Shin Splints are often caused by high-impact physical activity or overuse from
running, jumping, walking, swimming, or other basic physical activity. Overuse
occurs with the stretching of the muscles and ligaments from the top of the foot
to the shins when the forefoot is extended beyond the normal range of motion and
subsequent fast collapsing of the foot and arch during impact and mid-stance. |

| How Orthotics Can Help |
| Athletes, particularly runners, should incorporate a thorough stretching program to properly warm-up the muscles. They should decrease the distance of their walk or run, apply ice after the activity and avoid any uphill climbs. Athletes should use an orthotic device, heel cup, or heel cradle for extra support. |
| A heel cup or heel cradle elevates the heel to reduce stress and pressure on the achilles tendon. The device should be made with light-weight, shock absorbing materials. An orthotic device can be used to control over-pronation, support the longitudinal arch, and reduce stress on the achilles tendon. |
